International Nurses Day 2024
Every year on the 12 May we celebrate International Nurses day. It is celebrated on this day because this was the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Each year a different theme is chosen by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and this year the theme is ‘Our Nurses, Our Future. The economic power of care’.
‘The economic power of care’, was chosen to highlight the need for nursing to be seen as an investment, instead of a cost, and to “reshape” perceptions of nursing’s economic and societal benefits’. Nursing has been in the news a lot in the last few years with the covid pandemic, lack of funding for the NHS and more recently the rise of measles in the UK.
There are over 28 million nurses working worldwide in a variety of settings with a vast wealth of different clinical skills to try and keep us as healthy as we can be. Today is the day to celebrate all nurses, in all settings. Nurses are there for us when we are sick, when we need health advise, they were probably present when you were born!
